Alma d'Arte primary logo in color with white background

NMCO was approached by Alma D’Arte to create an inclusive and exciting new rebrand for the art-focused charter school and to develop a new and improved website. Identities are a vital representation of culture for any school, and to our knowledge, Alma D’Arte never really had an identity. It was essential to the staff and kids that the brand felt fun, colorful, and exciting.

Concept & Approach

Alma staff valued showcasing inclusivity, and what better way to do that than with a spectrum of colors? We developed a logo with their primary platypus color, purple, and then incorporated additional colors for each curriculum, such as dance, media, music, and more. NMCO worked in three phases of production—the identity, then the website, and finally, the launch.

Art Statement

At the core of Alma d’Arte Charter High School lies the radiant creative essence within each student, their Alma, or Soul. This Soul finds stylistic expression through a vibrant half-circle emitting a gradient of purple hues from its center. This emblem signifies inclusion, diversity, and the freedom of artistic expression, and is adaptable in various contexts. The icon is complimented by a custom, hand-drawn typeface inspired by the region’s pueblo-style architecture found on the Alma d’Arte campus. The letters intertwine, each offering support to the next, mirroring the supportive staff and student community. Colors are a contemporary allusion to the LGBTQIA+ rainbow’s vibrancy, yet thoughtfully cater to all students, irrespective of their LGBTQIA+ affiliation. A luminous magenta color represents the Soul, the seed, the spark, while the violet and lavender tones harmoniously complement and accentuate the Soul’s prominence, establishing it as the emblem’s pivotal element.

Rebrand announcement video with interview, piece to camera footage from students and Principal. The video team then connected with our graphics department to bring Alma d’Arte’s mascot, the Platypus, to life in the hallways of the school. The result is an engaging video to help celebrate and hype the students up for their new look and feel.

When Alma d’Arte reached out to us about their website, they wanted something different, something that would set them apart from the other charter schools in town. To help them achieve their goal, the web team connected with the graphics team to help bring the brand to life. Nodding to the rainbow element of the brand, our developers incorporated a curved shape divider on each page. Leveraging Airbnb’s Lottie technology, the web team was able to animate the brand’s characters on the website without having to sacrifice site speed from big files.

In New Mexico, charter schools are required to adhere to specific website regulations, including listing information related to their Governance Council such as announcements, agendas, financial reports, and minutes. At NMCO Studio, we want our clients to feel ownership of the work we create for them. To help them easily update the website, we built the website using WordPress and created a detailed web training guide. Now, Alma d’Arte’s staff can quickly update their website so that they can always have the most up to date information and continue to receive funding.
