La Piñon envisions a world free from the shadows of abuse and violence: We envision a community where every individual is safe, respected, and free from the impact of sexual violence and child abuse.

Concept & Approach

La Piñon tackles challenging issues often burdened with negative stigmas. Rather than focusing on the beginning of one’s journey before discovering La Piñon, we focused on the journey itself, and the transformative experience they have with La Piñon’s support. In line with the organization’s goal of eradicating stigmas that surround sexual assault recovery services, we developed a brand and website that exude hopefulness and warmth, and high-quality photography and video that capture La Piñon’s compassionate and professional nature.

Art Statement

The imagery of the piñon tree profoundly resonates with the enduring spirit and communal bonds fostered by La Piñon. This majestic tree, native to the Southwestern landscapes, epitomizes resilience and longevity. Much like the piñon, whose sap is a versatile tool for repairing and fortifying — mending cracks in pottery and rendering baskets watertight — La Piñon stands as a beacon of hope and restoration. It offers a sanctuary for survivors, guiding them through a transformative journey marked by patience and perseverance. In this healing process, individuals are not only mended but also enveloped in a new layer of strength and resilience, preparing them for a rejuvenated, enduring life of freedom.

The piñon jay, a symbol of courage and liberated existence, finds solace amidst the piñon’s branches. Its wings, a poetic embodiment of myriad small yet significant interactions with the tree, illustrate the uplifting power of La Piñon’s support. Each feather represents a moment where the tree has played a crucial role in the bird’s ascent, mirroring the organization’s pivotal role in empowering individuals to soar to new heights. This harmonious relationship between the piñon tree and the piñon jay beautifully encapsulates the essence of support, growth, and liberation that La Piñon strives to instill in every life it touches.

Website

Our goal was to create a 30-page website that was as compassionate as it was functional. We strove to create a website felt inclusive to all, recognizing that anyone can be a victim regardless of their age. Employing light colors, branded graphics and photography, and hopeful messaging, we designed an interface with clean navigation. Through rigorous testing, we felt confident that this new website provided all users with the tools to access helpful resources and a place to begin their healing journey.

Functionality

To help guide users to the resources they need and protect their safety, particularly those in vulnerable situations, it was important to the La Piñon team that a “safety button” was createdSince existing WordPress plugins did not serve our needs, we researched and developed custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code for this feature. We also added a prominent banner educating users on the importance of clearing their browsing history. We also streamlined the donation process for users. Lastly, we made sure that this website functioned properly on all devices, paying special care to mobile phones so that users can access the site on the go.
